Pre-WOCAL9 Training in Language Documentation: Methods and Data management

ELDP is running a ten-day training workshop on language documentation to share and transfer knowledge and skills about the methods and practices of language documentation will be held at The Netherlands Institute in Morocco (NIMAR), Rabat, Morocco, prior to the 9th World Congress of African Linguistics (WOCAL9) to be held at Mohamed V University, Rabat (25-28 August, 2018). The training is intended for graduate students, early career researchers and linguistic faculty in Africa.

Topics to be covered include:

• Introduction to documentary linguistics
• Visual mode of language
• Data gathering methods
• Data processing
• Language documentation and language contact
• Semantic analysis and lexicography


There are 25 places available. 10 places for participants from North Africa and 15 for participants from the rest of Africa. To be eligible, applicants must fulfil all of the criteria below:

• Reside and study/work in Africa.
• Minimum of BA or its equivalent involving some linguistic training.
• Some fieldwork experience or have concrete plans for doing documentation work.
• Be committed to and have a plan for transferring the knowledge they acquire to others in their universities and organisations.
