Local Partnerships
and Capacity Development

ELDP builds partnerships with institutions world wide to support local efforts in language documentation and preservation. With partner institutions we run two week training events. Students, scholars and community members from a specific area and surrounding countries are brought together at the local partner institution to work together for two weeks to run mini documentation projects. A team consisting of ELDP alumni and friends and ELAR staff provide training in theory and methods in language documentation and work with the local participants to on their documentation projects. Trainings cover topics such as introductory documentary linguistics, visual mode of language, data gathering and processing methods, language contact and lexicography.

In addition, ELDP trains local documenters in grant writing to provide an introduction to ELDP applications, designing documentation projects and applying to ELDP. Our aim is to provide long term support in local documentation and preservation efforts.

Over the past 7 years we have run trainings in Ghana, Cameroon, Russia, and China. In 2017 and 2018 we will be running trainings in Oaxaca (Mexico in collaboration with Roberto Zavala) and in Rabat (Morroco in collaboration with Felix Ameka) and in Lisbon (Portugal with Saloumeh Gholami).
